after appearances on idle hands and brstl, rhythmic theory returns to their own imprint to further explore gritty textures and mysterious moods within house and techno frameworks. where theory001 featured the somewhat soothing, melancholic tones of >echo vibe< and >omega syndrome<, this second installment comes caked in sonic muck and abrasive attitude.its not all dark and foreboding, as the graceful filter-swept key refrain of >siren song< will attest, but it takes a barrage of rasping hats and bludgeoning kicks and toms before such niceties can be foisted upon our ears. while there is an optimistic lilt to the particular notes the melody calls out, in the midst of such machismo percussion it cant help but feel emotionally ambiguous, continuing the tone set out in the first rhythmic theory releases.there is no such confusion over b side cut >genesis< from the apocalyptic boom of the opening kick to the rapid gun fire of the snare this is a track that wants to inflict damage. at the midway point the searing beat melts away as a wash of delay-riddled speech knocks you from your centre of gravity, only for the drums to come whipping back in to pick up the slack. even the sole synth note that rears its head is devoid of compassion, pulsing a creepy, robotic intonation through the clamour.

brian leeds produces electronic music under the name huerco s. his debut album for software is titled colonial patterns. on colonial patterns, leeds treats his kansas city region as a universe worthy of its own electronic music. to that end, leeds deconstructs midwestern techno and house tropes. the pieces are corrugated, rough, and decompositional. working cheaply, leeds conscientiously uses low-end software, synths and cassettes so as to subvert the gloss of so much urban dance music, giving tracks an impressionistic, emotive feel. the result is uniquely midwestern: there is an expansiveness to each piece that suits the open space and the storied past of its inhabitants.

rondenion is a japanese dj and producer. his link with music started working as a recording artist in the late 90s. under the name hirofumi goto, his released his debut ep *ameria*. it drew attention for its dark atmosphere, and was played by international figures of the electronic scene such as derrick may. he changed his name to rondenion as a tribute to chicago and detroit. not so long later, he released his *love bound ep* on the respected rush hour records. it reached the top sales chart position on the rushhour store, and rondenion began to make himself known within the european scene. in 2012, he co-founded ragrange symphony, alongside no milk and kez ym. kicks kicks is a young graphist, dj and producer based in france. his passion for skateboarding lead him to discover all the 90s deep house/garage scene such as kerry chandler through skateboard videotapes. his debut set happened in bordeaux a few years ago alongside nicholas & larcier. he is an analog freak and started producing his first tracks in 2013 which will finally be out on cracki records.

growing up in the deep south of germany with multi ethnic friends and big interest in many different music genres of the world, borrowed identity built his wide knowledge in music. this variety in his musical taste is also the reason why he is working under different aliases producing a big variety of sound from ambient to house to experimental music and everything inbetween.

untolds pennyroyal imprint drops its fourth release in august, a four track ep from techno heavyweights ben sims and paul macs fokus group project entitled fokus group ep. started by the hemlock recordings man earlier in 2013, pennyroyal has so far released ballsy, uncompromising modern techno by j tijn and boner m and that musical remit continues with sims and macs hardcore fuelled, selftitled assault. nut nut, mucky crack funk, 93.2 and rave x3 = murder and the titles and they pretty much speak for themselves � there is a reckless abandon across all four cuts that musically gives off a distinct old school feel feel without getting bogged down in self conscious retro aesthetics.

dixon cites tim hecker, autechre and wolfgang voigt as influences and this ep is as equally diverse. we begin with edge of the universe , an enigmatic techno experiment. tight hats and snare work give it an almost jackin feel whilst subtle bumping subs and cryptic vocal chops decorate throughout.

midnight moves. thats what comes to mind when you listen to cale parks s n1, preferably at an hour long after dusk has settled around you in some beautiful, insomniac city. parks finds � or more aptly, seeks � beauty and grace in ambience and shadows. n1 starts as pure atmosphere � it feels at first like a sort of lovely sonic nothingness slowly taking form � before growing into the darkly lit, gorgeous moodscape it later becomes. a sensual bassline, a pulsing downbeat, a cinematic piano, strains of italo disco, and the sensation of breezing down a lightless road. if you could make sensuous shapes of the night � imagine kneading the dark itself � it might, at the very best, feel like this. the task of remixing parks s original is taken up by french duo paradis, who can otherwise be heard making music on tim sweeney s beats in space label. the paris-based producers shine a brightening light on parks s dusky creation, quickening its pulse and trading in its darkwave undercurrents for enlivening techno and house. theres an element of floating here � a dreaminess in the rhythms, an astral aspect to the keys beaming through the beats. and with the addition of vocals, sung in french � a pop finishing touch on a song that already feels like an earworm � the transformation is complete. this excellent introduction to cale parkss music is also his debut release on the hakt label.

following the success of the consumer ep by fellow label owner james johnston comes the praise ep by alex agore, and its a true return to form for him on no matter what. the record opens with the title track >praise< - an inspired tribute to gospel music, keeping all the soul but reimagining it into something more infectious. uplifting keys combine with vocals that will have you trying your best to sing-a-long, over a bass groove that holds it all together. >falling< is a slower affair, with its dream-like chords, airy synthwork, cowbell hits and seamless hats. a perfect track to start a night or to end one. the b-side completes the package with two undeniable house jams. you will soon realise how much you like >theres no love< when its skippy vocal is stuck in your head, hours after hearing it for the first time. >i can feel you< closes out the ep on a deeper note which will have you thinking of moments when the sun is about to rise, yet the night is far from over.

sam walton is a 22 year old producer from manchester who came to hyperdub after feeding them demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the *walton ep*, the first of three eps for the label. since then he has honed and developed his music into *beyond*, finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesnt seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions.

cover: hiss : 1292 - aetherius society epit was all unplanned : the duo even got its name after this first record got its mastering. hiss : 1292?s aetherius society ep is a powerful and passionate statement. the creative frenzy of two talented producers - one from switzerland 12?, the other one from the parisian suburbs 92? - stuck together in a studio in geneva, just a couple meters away from the roaring noise of a construction site. they ve been putting computers out of the picture, jamming on their machines, synths and effects, and thus creating both forward-thinking and retrofuturistic pieces of techno, with that special instant classic feel.
